Winter in Glacier

(and Beyond)

Catch Glacier National Park this winter on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes, when wildlife visitors far outnumber human ones. Or, discover the Flathead Valley's outdoor nirvana beyond Park borders, where snowy havens for dogsledding, shredding and ice-skating await. Then, get your eat on -- all these calorie-burning diversions serve as the perfect excuse to inhale pizza (or enlightened vegan fare) back in the area's quaint mountain towns.
Glide Through Glacier
Roll in aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder, which puts you within a quick stroll of the historic Izaak Walton Inn. From the Inn's railroad-themed rooms, you can cross-country ski 33km of groomed-daily trails or tour into the Park, either with or without a guide. For a custom-designed Park outing, team up with Glacier Adventure Guides for a full-moon snowshoe session, a backcountry ski day, or a multi-day ski tour (complete with igloo lodging).
EXPLORE GLACIER ›
Buzz Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road is impassable in the winter for a reason: each year, it accumulates up to 80 feet of snow. Local Scoop Kelly B. says: Wear camo or full glam to the Back Room in Columbia Falls.
Frolic around the Flathead
Glacier National Park might be the most famous outdoorsy draw in the Flathead Valley, but it's not the only one. Hit the lift-served terrain at Whitefish Mountain Resort or Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, or, forget lifts and explore the backcountry via snowcat with Great Northern Powder Guides. Strap on skinny skis at one of the area's many cross-country trails: the Glacier Nordic Center in Whitefish, the Bigfork Community Nordic Trails in Bigfork or the Blacktail Mountain Cross-Country Ski Trails outside of Lakeside. Or, mush rescued huskies aboard a speeding sled at Dog Sled Adventures.
WINTER IN THE NORTHWEST ›
Come in from the Cold
Around here, there are plenty of places to thaw out -- wrap your frozen fingers around a 25-cent mug of coffee at Sykes or warm your insides with pizza and microbrews at infamous local's joint Moose's Saloon, both in Kalispell. If your palette is more of the vegan variety, drop into the Green Tea House in Whitefish. In Kalispell, get a history break with a Conrad Mansion tour, then continue your historical exploits with a stay at the Kalispell Grand Hotel.
FIND A PLACE TO EAT
If you prefer your national parks tourist-free, your winters packed with outdoorsiness and your meat either medium rare or made from soy (both are found here), then hop the next train for the Flathead Valley. (And seize the opportunity to max out your baggage allotment on gear -- here, you're gonna use it.)
