Winter in Glacier
(and Beyond)
|
|
Catch Glacier National Park this winter on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes, when wildlife visitors far outnumber human ones. Or, discover the Flathead Valley's outdoor nirvana beyond Park borders, where snowy havens for
dogsledding, shredding and ice-skating await. Then, get your eat on -- all these calorie-burning diversions serve as the perfect excuse to inhale pizza (or enlightened vegan fare) back in the area's quaint mountain towns. |

Glide Through Glacier |
 |
|
Roll in aboard
Amtrak's Empire Builder, which puts you within a quick stroll of the historic
Izaak Walton Inn. From the Inn's railroad-themed rooms, you can cross-country ski 33km of groomed-daily trails or tour into the Park, either with or without a guide. For a custom-designed Park outing, team up with
Glacier Adventure Guides for a full-moon snowshoe session, a backcountry ski day, or a multi-day ski tour (complete with igloo lodging). |

Come in from the Cold |
|
Around here, there are plenty of places to thaw out -- wrap your frozen fingers around a 25-cent mug of coffee at Sykes or warm your insides with pizza and microbrews at infamous local's joint
Moose's Saloon, both in
Kalispell. If your palette is more of the vegan variety, drop into the
Green Tea House in Whitefish. In Kalispell, get a history break with a
Conrad Mansion tour, then continue your historical exploits with a stay at the
Kalispell Grand Hotel. |

If you prefer your national parks tourist-free, your winters packed with outdoorsiness and your meat either medium rare or made from soy (both are found here), then hop the next train for the Flathead Valley. (And seize the opportunity to
max out your baggage allotment on gear -- here, you're gonna use it.)
