“Ever since I was a child, Custer’s Last Stand has had a unique hold on my sense of adventure. When I saw a tiny magazine ad for horseback tours of the Bighorn Battlefield with a working ranch stay, I booked a trip for the reenactment of the battle in June.
“The experience was such a grand one. At the ranch, we rode horses, worked cattle and ate good food … just like real cowboys. On the day of the reenactment, we rode horseback on the exact same land that the Sioux and the 7th Cavalry had ridden on. I felt as if I was on hallowed ground. There were trumpets and mock battles—it’s like I was actually there and not just a spectator. My horse and I crossed the Little Bighorn Battlefield, just as Reno’s Cavalry did.”
