When it gets cold, time freezes in the Seeley Lake-Swan Lake Valley in northwest Montana. At least, that's how it feels when you check into the vintage Double Arrow Lodge or the long-established Rich Ranch. From their timbered comfort, you can trade in your telephone and TV for sleigh rides, ice-fishing excursions (just pick a lake—there are 8 big ones) and endless snowmobile adventures—all powered by time-honored eateries like Lindey's Prime Steak House in Seeley Lake and Trixie's in Ovando.
Another thing happens when it gets cold here—celebration. In late January, the town throws Winterfest, with a chili cook-off, dessert festival, ice-sculpture contest, snowmobile poker run, bonfires, cocoa and more. In February, huskies stoke their dreams of the Iditarod at the Race to the Sky qualifier. For the rest of the winter—find hidden backcountry stashes and cozy yurt digs with Yurtski, marvel at frozen Morrell Falls aboard a snowmobile and cross-country ski up the North Fork of Lost Creek.
