About The Friends of Canyon Creek are currently working on a walk through display at the monument location to tell the history of the Canyon Creek Battle between the Nez Perce led by Chief Joseph and the US Calvary led by Colonel Samuel Sturgis. This battle took place on September 13,1877. 125 warriors held off the cavalry enabling the rest of the band of 800 Nez Perce to continue their flight from Oregon to asylum in Canada.

SPECIAL DIRECTIONS Canyon Creek Battlefield Monument is located 7 miles north of Laurel. Take First Avenue North to Buffalo Trails Road. This will lead you to the monument.
