About
Canyon Creek cabin was built in 1930 as a guard station where rangers could stay when they were working in this area. The cabin sits at the base of a sheer cliff, which is home to many mountain goats. Moose can usually be found in the willow bottoms and a creek nearby has brook trout, some rainbow and cutthroat trout. During the winter deer and elk can be seen on their winter range located above and down the canyon from the cabin. A short drive takes you to Vipond Park where wild flowers are spectacular in early summer. Nearby too is Glendale, an old smelter town. There isn't much left of Glendale, just a few old buildings, the red brick smelter stack, and the foundations of many buildings. Two cemeteries are located nearby. Most of the area around Glendale is privately owned. The historic Canyon Creek charcoal kilns are one mile away from the cabin, down Canyon Creek.
If you're interested in hiking, a trailhead near the Canyon Creek Guest Ranch (five miles up the Canyon Creek drainage on road #7401) leads to various lakes in the area.
The cabin is equipped with a wood stove, cupboard, table, three folding chairs and four fold-down single person spring bunks. There is usually a saw, axe and some dishes and pans, but that can't be guaranteed. The cabin has no electricity or running water. The toilet is outside.
